Obsolete Currency and Confederate
Currency
OBSOLETE CURRENCY -
Printed from the early 1800’s through
1870’s. This currency was printed by states, banks and private
companies during this time period. The currency that was issued by
banks is also known as Broken Bank Notes because the majority of these
banks eventually failed or went out of business.
Thousands of states, banks and private
companies issued their own currency and much of this paper money was
only printed on one side to save money on the cost of printing. Much
of this currency was printed on very thin paper and many had
interesting vignettes and portraits of famous people of that time
period. Most of this paper money has been heavily circulated and it is
usually numbered, dated and hand signed.
There also exists, paper money that
was printed but never issued. This currency is called remainder notes.
They are usually brand new or high grade and they are not numbered,
dated and signed, but they are collectable because of their historical
significance and attractive portraits and vignettes.
