Silver Certificates were authorized by Acts of Congress in 1878 and 1886. The silver law of 1963 (which allowed the Treasury Department to discontinue stockpiling silver bullion to secure the silver certificates) led to these notes becoming obsolete and stopped their general circulation. The Treasury Department eventually stopped redeeming silver certificated for silver in 1964. Regular size silver certificates were made from 1928 through 1953 and were made in denominations of $1, $5 and $10.
